Opposition parliamentary contender in Brest appeals registration denial

Lyudmila Dzenisenka, chairperson of the Brest city organization of the “Spravedlivy Mir” Belarusian Party of the Left, has filed a complaint with the central election commission about a local district election commission’s decision to deny her registration as a parliamentary candidate.

According to her, the district election commission of Brestskaya-Zahodnyaya Electoral District No. 1 explained that she had failed to indicate in her income and property statement a summer house near Brest, which was listed on the register as her property.

Ms. Dzyanisenka insists that she sold the house as far back as July 1, 2003. She says that she has a certified document confirming the sale and has attached a copy to her complaint.

According to Ms. Dzyanisenka, the Electoral Code specifies that a district election commission may deny registration to a parliamentary contender if the contender includes false information of “significant importance” in his income and property statement.

“I ask the central election commission to annul the decision of the district commission and register me as parliamentary candidate,” Ms. Dzyanisenka told BelaPAN on Friday. “I believe the commission took a perfunctory approach to examining my income and property statement.” //BelaPAN
