Lukashenka greets head of Russian Orthodox Church on 66th birthday

Alyaksandr Lukashenka has sent birthday greetings to Patriarch Kirill (Cyril I), head of the Russian Orthodox Church, who turned 66 on November 20.

The service of Patriarch Kirill is an "example of genuine selflessness and faithfulness to the chosen path and the pastoral duty," the Belarusian leader says in his message, according to the presidential press office. "Under your primacy, the Orthodox Church works to expand opportunities for its high mission, preaching eternal truths and timeless moral values, engaging in social service and charity, participating in the raising and education of the new generation."

Mr. Lukashenka describes the patriarch's October 14 visit to Minsk as another gesture of friendly support. "I remember our meeting with special warmth and assure you that you will always be a dear and welcome guest on the Belarusian land," he says.

On October 14, Mr. Lukashenka presented Patriarch Kirill with the Order of Friendship "for a significant contribution to the formation of the Union State, the strengthening of friendly relations, the unity of the peoples of Belarus and Russia."

Patriarch Kirill was born Vladimir Gundyayev in Leningrad on November 20, 1946. A Local Council of the Russian Orthodox Church elected him patriarch of Moscow and all Russia in January 2009. //BelaPAN
