Lukashenka: EU went to freezing deposits on Cyprus while accusing others of violating human rights

The European Union went to freezing individuals' bank deposits in Cyprus while reproaching others with violations of human rights, Alyaksandr Lukashenka told reporters in Minsk on Friday.

"We are often criticized for human rights violations, but how should we understand the fact that the European Union has recently fleeced a huge part of the population? They were not poor people. Yes, they were hiding their money in offshore accounts, but that was legal. EU chiefs probably kept their money there as well and then they retroactively froze everything and took away 60 percent. That’s the way they treat human rights.”

"Cyprus itself wouldn't have done that,” Mr. Lukashenka said. “The European Union required it to do that. I know this for sure…. They took away property from people, although they were not poor people."

"I like Dmitry Medvedev's expression that ‘the European Union robs robbers,’ or something like that, and therefore I am calm about it,” Mr. Lukashenka said. “Non-poor people who were hiding money in offshore accounts, shared it with the people of Cyprus by order of the European Union.” // BelaPAN
