Belarus decides against building LNG terminals at Lithuanian seaports

The construction of liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals at Lithuanian seaports to supply Belarus with the fuel would be economically inexpedient, Belarusian Deputy Energy Minister Mikhail Mikhadzyuk told reporters in Minsk on Thursday.

A terminal for receiving and liquefying natural gas would have to be built at the ports, Mr. Mikhadzyuk said. An inter-agency working group has concluded that such a project would be unfeasible, not only in Lithuania but also other countries he said.

Belarusian First Deputy Prime Minister Uladzimir Syamashka announced as far back as 2010 that Belarus was considering the possibility of building an LNG terminal in Lithuania to diversify its gas imports. Syarhey Sidorski, who was then prime minister, described the project as profitable and efficient and argued that it could be carried out promptly. //BelaPAN
