Belarusian foreign ministry official meets with US diplomats in Washington
Yury Ambrazevich, head of the Belarusian foreign ministry’s Main Department for Multilateral Diplomacy, had a meeting with representatives of the US Department of State in Washington on Friday.
Participants at the meeting discussed the priorities of Belarus and the United States at the forthcoming session of the UN General Assembly, according to the press office of the Belarusian foreign ministry.
Mr. Ambrazevich informed the US diplomats about Belarus’ proposals for multilateral cooperation in the international arena and suggested joint measures to solve a number of international problems.
Also under discussion were issues relating to the work of Belarus and the United States within the United Nations and other international organizations and bilateral issues that affect the interests of the two countries at multilateral forums.
Participants “expressed an interest to continue the dialogue between the sides to improve the understanding of their stances,” the press office said.
For several years, Belarus has been targeted by US sanctions, including visa bans and asset freezes against 10 Belarusian officials, a freeze on the assets of state petrochemical conglomerate Belnaftakhim, and a ban on any business dealings with the conglomerate and its subsidiaries.
At the end of May, the US State Department dropped its restrictive measures against the Belarusian Optical Mechanical Association (BelOMO) and Belarusian arms trader ZAT Beltechexport because they were imposed in May 2011 for a period of only two years. // BelaPAN
