As many as 859 people nominated for 44 precinct election commissions for repeat House of Representatives election in Homyel
As many as 859 people have been nominated for membership in the 44 precinct election commissions for a repeat election for the only vacant seat in the House of Representatives.
The election will take place in Electoral District No. 36 in Homyel with eight people seeking access to the ballot, including one representative of the United Civic Party and one representative of the “Spravedlivy Mir” (Just World) Belarusian Party of the Left.
As many as 367 people were nominated for membership in precinct election commissions through the collection of voter signatures, 187 by "workers’ collectives" and 295 by political parties and non-governmental organizations.
Political parties nominated only 10 representatives for inclusion in precinct election commissions. In particular, six people were put forward by the Republican Party of Labor and Justice and four by the Communist Party of Belarus.
Among those nominated by NGOs were 80 representatives of the Federation of Trade Union of Belarus, 44 representatives of Belaya Rus, 36 representatives of the Belarusian Union of Women, 33 representatives of the Belarusian National Youth Union and 26 representatives of the Belarusian Public Association of Veterans.
The formation of the precinct election commissions is to be completed no later than February 5 inclusive.
Syarhey Melnikaw, a member of the Liberal Democratic Party, was the only candidate in Electoral District No. 36 in the 2012 House of Representatives elections. He failed to get elected because he did not win at least 50 percent plus one vote, according to the central election commission.
The repeat election will coincide in time with the local elections and take place on March 23. //BelaPAN
